A New Twist on an Old Fashioned

There's something about an Old Fashioned that we've always found cozy and classic. For me though, they are a little on the strong side. This version that joe concocted goes a bit heavier on the orange, with the addition of orange bitters (along with the traditional angostora) and Grand Marnier. The cloves are also on the generous side.

If you want to mellow it further you can always add a bit more sugar and water. Cheers!

INGREDIENTS

  • 8 Dashes Angostura Bitters

  • 8 Dashes Scrappy's Orange Bitters

  • 1 tsp Sugar

  • 1 Small Orange

  • 1 oz Grand Marnier

  • 2 oz Bulleit 95 Rye Whiskey

  • 1 oz Water

  • 1 or 2 Cherries. Amarena or Maraschino

  • 5 Whole Cloves

THE PROCESS

Cut a small, 1 inch round orange rind and place in the bottom of glass with the sugar, cloves, bitters and Grand Marnier.

Muddle until sugar dissolves.

Add ice. Clear, large pieces preferable. Higher-end grocery or liquor stores sometimes sell larger/clearer sizes. Or, you can get your own sphere molds or cubes online

Add whiskey, water and cherry.

Cut one more long rind and garnish. You can use either a channel knife for thin spirals or a citrus peeler for more traditional, wide rinds.
